A close associate of Mukhtar Ansari was shot by unidentified gunmen in a brazen daylight attack on Thursday near Aseni Mor along the highway connecting Lucknow and Ayodhya, triggering panic in the area and prompting a large-scale police search operation.
The victim, Shoaib Kidwai, also known as Bobby, was travelling in a car when two assailants on a motorcycle intercepted the vehicle and opened fire, according to police officials. Multiple shots were fired at close range, leaving Kidwai critically injured. Officers from the local police station rushed him to a hospital immediately after the attack. Authorities said his condition remained serious, though detailed medical updates were awaited.
Investigators recovered five empty cartridges from the scene, indicating the use of a semi-automatic firearm. Senior officers and a forensic team examined the site, documenting evidence and collecting ballistic samples. Police sealed off the stretch briefly to facilitate the investigation and to prevent contamination of clues.
Preliminary findings suggest the attackers had tracked the vehicle before striking, though officials have not confirmed a motive. No group has claimed responsibility, and investigators are examining possible links to past rivalries and criminal networks. CCTV footage from nearby establishments and highway cameras is being reviewed to trace the suspects’ route before and after the shooting.
The incident caused immediate alarm among residents and commuters, many of whom fled the area after hearing gunfire. Additional police units were deployed across key junctions in the district to prevent further incidents and reassure the public. Security was also tightened in sensitive pockets as a precautionary measure.
A senior police officer said teams had been formed to identify and arrest the attackers and that checkpoints were set up across adjoining districts. “We are pursuing multiple leads and will act swiftly once the suspects are traced,” the officer stated, declining to elaborate on specific angles under investigation.
The shooting has renewed concerns over daylight violent crime in parts of Uttar Pradesh, particularly incidents involving individuals with alleged links to organized groups. Authorities said patrols would be intensified on major highways and urban entry points while the probe continues.
