Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday projected West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as the most formidable political challenger to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that she is leading the national resistance against the saffron party ahead of the state’s forthcoming Assembly elections.
Yadav made the remarks after meeting Banerjee at the state secretariat, Nabanna, in Kolkata. Following the meeting, the two leaders briefly addressed the media, with Yadav expressing confidence that Banerjee would secure a fourth consecutive term as Chief Minister. “Across the country, only Didi can take on the BJP. The ED has already lost to her in Bengal. Now the BJP will lose,” he said.
The meeting comes amid heightened political activity in West Bengal as parties position themselves for the next Assembly contest. Banerjee said the interaction was short due to prior commitments but described it as constructive. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been seeking to consolidate opposition unity while sharpening its attack on the BJP over alleged misuse of central agencies.
Yadav echoed these allegations, referring to recent Enforcement Directorate raids at the office of political consultancy firm I-PAC and at the residence of its chief, Prateek Jain. Without naming individuals, he alluded to the ongoing “pen drive” controversy and accused the BJP of targeting Banerjee’s associates through investigative agencies. “They have not been able to forget the pen. They cannot accept that Mamata Banerjee has defeated the ED politically in Bengal,” he said.
The Samajwadi Party chief also raised concerns over the SIR issue, alleging that both the BJP and the Election Commission were acting with political intent. Standing alongside Banerjee, Yadav claimed that electoral processes were being manipulated to the BJP’s advantage. “The BJP is heading towards defeat in Bengal. That is why SIR is being used to cut votes. The Commission has been turned into a weapon,” he alleged.
The BJP has consistently rejected such charges, maintaining that central agencies and constitutional bodies function independently and in accordance with the law. The Election Commission has also denied allegations of bias, reiterating its commitment to free and fair polls.
Yadav’s remarks underline growing coordination among opposition parties as they prepare for a series of state elections and the broader national political contest. For the TMC, the endorsement from a prominent opposition leader adds weight to Banerjee’s narrative of Bengal as a bulwark against the BJP.
Reiterating his support, Yadav said there was no uncertainty about the electoral outcome in the state. “The BJP will not succeed in Bengal. Didi will become Chief Minister for the fourth time,” he said, signalling continued opposition solidarity in the run-up to the elections.
