Akhilesh Yadav Targets BJP Over Voter Revision, Leadership Choices and Governance in UP

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday launched a broad attack on the Uttar Pradesh government and the Bharatiya Janata Party, raising concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleged voter deletions, and recent leadership appointments within the BJP.

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow, Yadav questioned the government’s claim that four crore voters had been removed from electoral rolls during the revision exercise. He said no official data had been made public to substantiate the figure and alleged coordination between the state government and the Election Commission to selectively target Samajwadi Party supporters. “Officials are being instructed to find excuses to delete our voters,” he alleged.

Yadav also criticised the BJP’s internal appointments, drawing attention to what he described as a mismatch between experience and responsibility. Without naming individuals, he questioned why a five-time MLA had been elevated to a national role while a seven-time MP was appointed state party president, calling it an insult to the PDA (Backward, Dalit and Minority) social coalition. He suggested the move was aimed at politically diminishing certain leaders within the ruling party.

On governance, the SP chief raised questions over the handling of the codeine-based cough syrup case, alleging a scam running into thousands of crores and accusing the government of inaction. He claimed enforcement agencies had acted selectively and that influential figures linked to the case were being shielded, while bulldozer action was disproportionately used against PDA communities.

Yadav further alleged irregularities in the conduct of by-elections, claiming the technology used for voter revision was linked to donors of the ruling party. He echoed concerns raised by opposition leaders in other states, warning that voter verification mechanisms were being misused.

Touching on issues ranging from air pollution and law enforcement to institutional appointments, Yadav said governance in Uttar Pradesh was being driven by slogans rather than policy. He reiterated his party’s demand for transparency in electoral processes and accountability in administration, warning that public trust in democratic institutions was at stake.
