Amit Shah Personally Asked Yogi Adityanath to Lead Uttar Pradesh, Piyush Goyal Reveals

Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday offered a rare insight into the circumstances that led to Yogi Adityanath’s appointment as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, revealing that former BJP national president Amit Shah personally asked him to take charge of the state.

Addressing party leaders and workers at the anointment ceremony of the newly appointed BJP Uttar Pradesh president, Pankaj Chaudhary, Goyal said the decision was conveyed directly by Shah. According to Goyal, Shah visited his residence during the leadership selection process and, in his presence, made a phone call to Yogi Adityanath, asking him to assume responsibility for leading Uttar Pradesh.

Goyal’s remarks highlighted the central leadership’s role in identifying and entrusting key organisational and administrative responsibilities at crucial political moments. He said the call reflected the party’s confidence in Yogi Adityanath’s ability to provide decisive leadership in India’s most populous state.

The disclosure came during a gathering that marked the formal elevation of Pankaj Chaudhary as the BJP’s new state unit president, an event attended by senior party leaders, ministers and functionaries. Speakers at the ceremony underlined the importance of organisational unity and strong leadership as the party prepares for upcoming political challenges in Uttar Pradesh.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also addressed the gathering, sharing a personal anecdote from his early years in public life. He recalled an incident from Sambhal, where he said he was affectionately referred to as a “father” after a decade of sustained public engagement and service in the region, drawing applause from the audience.

Party leaders said the recollections served to underline the BJP’s emphasis on long-term commitment and grassroots connect in leadership roles. The event, they added, symbolised continuity in the party’s leadership structure in Uttar Pradesh, with organisational and government leadership working in coordination.

With Pankaj Chaudhary taking over as state president, senior leaders reiterated that the BJP would focus on strengthening its organisation across districts while building on the governance record of the Yogi Adityanath government.
