Assam Assembly Elections Likely in Single Phase; Poll Schedule Expected Early March

Assembly elections in Assam are likely to be conducted in a single phase in the first week of April, with the official schedule expected to be announced between March 4 and March 8, according to officials familiar with the preparations. Voting will cover all 126 constituencies, as the tenure of the current state government ends in May 2026.

Sources said the Election Commission of India has completed key groundwork, including revision of electoral rolls and logistical planning, enabling it to hold polling in one phase instead of multiple rounds. A final decision is expected soon after internal assessments of security, manpower, and administrative readiness.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is preparing an intensive campaign for what it hopes will be a third consecutive term in power. Party leaders have set an ambitious target of winning more than 100 seats. In recent months, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the state several times, signalling the party’s strategic focus on the election.

The opposition Indian National Congress is attempting to mount a coordinated challenge through an alliance of 10 parties that includes Left and regional groups. Political analysts say the contest is shaping into a high-stakes race defined by regional identity, immigration concerns, and economic development.

Among the dominant campaign themes are alleged illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, border security, and preservation of Assamese cultural identity. These issues have consistently influenced electoral discourse in the state and are expected to remain central to party manifestos and campaign messaging.

The Election Commission on February 10 released the final electoral roll after completing the Special Revision 2026 exercise. The updated list records 2,49,58,139 registered voters, down from 2,52,01,624 in the draft roll. Officials said 2,43,485 names were removed during verification due to death, relocation, duplication, or ineligibility. The final list includes 1,24,82,213 male voters, 1,24,75,583 female voters, and 343 third-gender voters.

Earlier draft rolls published in December 2025 had already removed over 10.56 lakh entries, including more than 93,000 “D-voters,” whose citizenship status remains under scrutiny and who are barred from voting pending tribunal decisions.

Election administrators say completion of voter verification marks the transition into full election mode, with deployment planning and security coordination underway. The coming weeks are expected to see intensified campaigning, alliance negotiations, and candidate announcements as parties prepare for what is projected to be one of the most closely watched state contests of the year.
