The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) received a total of ₹1,472.8 crore during the 2026 Assembly election cycle covering West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, according to election expenditure statements submitted to the Election Commission.
The latest disclosures also show that the BJP's closing balance increased from ₹6,722.6 crore on March 15, 2026, to ₹7,627.2 crore on May 6, when the election process concluded.
However, the expenditure figures currently available publicly cover Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The BJP reported a combined election expenditure of ₹160 crore in these three regions, including spending by its central headquarters as well as state and district units.
BJP's ₹1,472.8 Crore Receipts
The BJP's central headquarters recorded total receipts of ₹1,472.8 crore during the election period for the five Assembly polls.
The figure provides an indication of the substantial financial resources available to the party during a major election cycle. However, it should not be treated as the amount spent by the BJP in all five states.
The Election Commission had scheduled the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Assam Saw Highest Spending
Among the three states for which expenditure details have been disclosed, Assam recorded the highest BJP spending at ₹96.3 crore.
Tamil Nadu followed with ₹51.6 crore, while the party spent approximately ₹11.9 crore in Puducherry.
Together, these three figures total ₹159.8 crore, broadly corresponding to the ₹160 crore reported by the party.
₹130.4 Crore on Propaganda
A substantial portion of the reported expenditure went towards general party campaigning and propaganda.
The BJP spent approximately ₹130.4 crore on general party propaganda, while another ₹29.6 crore went towards lump-sum payments to candidates and publicity related to their criminal antecedents.
The spending included advertising, campaign material, travel and other election-related activities.
Assam Campaign Costs ₹96.3 Crore
Assam accounted for nearly 60 per cent of the BJP's reported expenditure across the three states.
According to the available breakdown, the party spent around ₹76.7 crore on general propaganda in Assam, including ₹23.1 crore from its central unit. Another ₹19.5 crore was spent on candidates.
The campaign expenditure also included approximately ₹27.3 crore on travel by star campaigners, ₹37 crore on advertisements, ₹8.9 crore on publicity material and ₹2.3 crore on other expenses.
Tamil Nadu Spending at ₹51.6 Crore
In Tamil Nadu, the BJP reported expenditure of approximately ₹51.6 crore.
The party authorised around ₹44.5 crore for general party propaganda and spent another ₹7 crore on candidates, according to the expenditure details.
The Tamil Nadu election was among the most closely watched contests of the 2026 Assembly cycle, with the BJP seeking to expand its political footprint in the southern state.
Puducherry Gets ₹11.9 Crore
The BJP reported its lowest expenditure among the three disclosed regions in Puducherry, where it spent approximately ₹11.9 crore.
The party contested the election as part of the broader political contest in the Union Territory. Official Election Commission results show the BJP won four Assembly seats in Puducherry.
Bengal, Kerala Figures Awaited
While the ₹1,472.8 crore receipt figure relates to the five-state election cycle, the Election Commission has not yet publicly released the BJP's corresponding expenditure statements for West Bengal and Kerala, according to current reports.
Therefore, the ₹160 crore expenditure figure should not be presented as the BJP's total spending across all five Assembly elections.
The distinction is important because the party's spending in West Bengal and Kerala could change the overall expenditure picture once those statements become publicly available.
