Radhamohan Das Agrawal, BJP’s state in-charge, on Friday addressed the party’s defeat in the Anta assembly by-election, asserting that the outcome demonstrates the fairness of the Bharatiya Janata Party in conducting elections. Speaking from Jaipur, he emphasized that despite holding governments at both the state and Delhi levels, the party chose to respect public sentiment without attempting to manipulate the process.
“We could have influenced the outcome through political, administrative, or voter list measures, but we chose to honor the democratic process,” Agrawal said. Highlighting voter participation, he noted that Anta witnessed 81% turnout, comparing it to 70% turnout in Srinagar during Jammu and Kashmir elections. “For those accusing BJP of vote theft, this result is a resounding slap on their face,” he added.
Agrawal also criticized Congress leadership, suggesting that Ashok Gehlot has become outdated. “If we were merely making empty promises, we wouldn’t have won in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi. There is a strong coordination between PM Modi’s message and the people’s aspirations,” he remarked. He contrasted BJP’s governance approach with Congress, saying the latter relied on rhetoric while harming the poor over decades. “In the last 11 years, we have worked to improve the lives of the poor and middle class,” he stated.
Regarding the by-election, Agrawal clarified that he did not play a direct role and described it as a single contest where the party remained fully committed. “Loss and victory are integral to political life. Winning many elections while conceding a few at times keeps the democratic spirit alive,” he noted.
The Anta by-election has sparked discussions on electoral integrity, voter engagement, and political strategy in Rajasthan, with BJP leadership framing the result as evidence of commitment to fair democratic processes rather than a setback in its political journey.
