Chuvaliya Koli Community Questions BJP Loyalty; Considers Switching to Congress

Leaders of the Chuvaliya Koli Thakor community in Gujarat are expressing growing dissatisfaction with the BJP, citing decades of support without proportional political representation. Despite being associated with the party for 40 years, the community has not received a single assembly ticket in Saurashtra nor significant posts in the cabinet.

Community Meeting in Rajkot Sets Future Strategy

A major meeting was held at the residence of community leader Ranchod Udreja in Rajkot to discuss the community’s political roadmap. Leaders from six constituencies, including Rajkot, Morbi, and Wankaner, participated in the deliberations.

Ranchod Udreja said, “Our patience has run out. Despite decades of loyalty, we have neither representation in the cabinet nor in city organizations. Now we are considering joining a party that will give our community due prominence.”

The meeting concluded with a plan to hold smaller district and taluka-level discussions across Saurashtra, followed by a mega-conference of approximately 1.5 lakh people to announce a collective decision.

Political Representation Concerns

Udreja highlighted the lack of political opportunities despite the community’s population of around 2.5 crore in Gujarat. He noted that in Rajkot city, the community could contest in six wards, yet it has received only one or two tickets. He also criticized the allocation of marginal portfolios to community members in the cabinet, noting that Purushottam Solanki was assigned the fisheries department, which does not reflect the community’s size or importance.

He questioned why, despite being loyal BJP voters, the Koli and Thakor communities have been sidelined, while smaller communities receive representation.

Potential Shift Toward Congress

The Rajkot meeting follows a closed-door session with Congress veteran Bharatsinh Solanki two days ago. Solanki reportedly emphasized the importance of community leadership and proportional representation, referencing constitutional provisions for Dalits and tribals. He also praised Rahul Gandhi’s leadership, signaling Congress’s interest in engaging the community.

Udreja confirmed that while no final decision has been made, the community is exploring political alternatives and may switch allegiances if it serves their social and political interests.

Implications for Gujarat Politics

If the Chuvaliya Koli Thakor community, historically aligned with the BJP, moves collectively toward Congress, it could significantly reshape political dynamics in Saurashtra and Gujarat at large. Political observers are now closely watching the community’s next steps.
