Congress Padyatra in Ahmedabad Halted After National Herald Relief; Gujarat Unit Chief Detained

The Gujarat Congress on Wednesday held a padyatra in Ahmedabad to mark recent court relief granted to senior party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case, but the march was halted by police, leading to the detention of state party president Amit Chavda and several workers.

The foot march, organised by the Ahmedabad City Congress, began at Nehru Bridge and was led by Chavda along with senior state and city leaders. Congress workers carrying banners and placards marched under the slogan “Satyamev Jayate,” projecting the court order as a vindication of the party’s stand.

As the procession moved towards the BJP office at Khanpur, police stopped the march near the end of Nehru Bridge, citing law and order concerns. Chavda, along with Leader of Opposition in the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Shahzadkhan Pathan, Congress leader Shahnawaz Sheikh, corporators and several party workers, were detained and taken away in police vehicles.

Eyewitnesses said there was brief friction between police personnel and Congress workers when the march was stopped. Police placed barricades and a van on the route to prevent the rally from proceeding further. No injuries were reported.

Congress leaders said the padyatra was intended as a peaceful demonstration to celebrate what they described as a reaffirmation of truth in the National Herald case. Banners carried during the march read “Truth Alone Triumphs,” “Fear-free politics is Congress’s identity,” and “The country will run by the Constitution, not by misuse of agencies.”

Police officials said the march did not have permission to proceed towards the BJP office and that detentions were made to prevent any escalation. All those detained were later taken to nearby police stations.

The incident adds to the ongoing political sparring in Gujarat, with the Congress accusing the ruling BJP of misusing investigative agencies against opposition leaders, while the state administration maintains that law and order protocols were followed.
