Ink Vandalism Targets PM Modi’s Poster in Rajkot Ahead of Vibrant Summit Visit

Rajkot witnessed an incident of vandalism on Wednesday after unidentified persons splashed ink on a poster featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, officials said. The mischief was reported on a government-issued ‘Jago Grahak Jago’ awareness banner installed near Chaudhary High School Square, days ahead of the Prime Minister’s scheduled visit to the city.

According to local authorities, the poster carrying the Prime Minister’s photograph was found defaced early in the morning. Municipal workers noticed the ink marks during routine inspection and immediately informed the police. The banner is part of a nationwide consumer awareness campaign run by the central government.

Police officials said the incident appears to be an act of mischief rather than a coordinated protest, though investigations are underway to identify those responsible. CCTV footage from nearby shops and traffic junctions is being examined, and statements from local residents are being recorded.

“The incident was noticed today and a case of defacement of public property is being looked into. We are verifying camera footage from the area to trace the persons involved,” a senior police officer said.

The vandalism comes ahead of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Rajkot for the Saurashtra-Kutch Regional Vibrant Summit, scheduled to be held at Marwadi University from January 10 to 12. Security arrangements in the city are already being reviewed as part of preparations for the high-profile event.

Civic authorities removed the defaced banner and replaced it with a fresh one to ensure that the campaign materials remain intact. No organisation or individual has so far claimed responsibility for the act.

Political reactions were muted, with officials urging restraint and caution against drawing premature conclusions. Authorities have appealed to the public to maintain calm and cooperate with the investigation.

The police said further action would be taken once the identities and motives of those involved are established.
