Union Minister for Education and Skill Development Jayant Chaudhary on Wednesday cancelled his scheduled participation in the Pravasi Rajasthani Divas event at the Jaipur Exhibition and Convention Center (JECC), triggering speculation over the reasons behind the abrupt decision.
Chaudhary was listed as one of the key guests alongside Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Manohar Lal Khattar and Bhupender Yadav. However, his name was missing from the newspaper advertisements issued on Wednesday morning. Officials familiar with the development said the omission did not go unnoticed and may have contributed to the minister’s withdrawal.
The cancellation unfolded even as senior Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leaders, including state president Joginder Singh Awana, arrived at Jaipur airport to receive him. The party had put up welcome banners across major intersections in anticipation of his visit. The information about Chaudhary’s no-show reached them shortly before his expected arrival.
Awana maintained that the minister’s programme was postponed due to urgent parliamentary commitments. “We had made all preparations, but his visit was postponed because of an important issue in the Parliament session. I only have this much information,” he told reporters.
However, multiple Union Ministers attended the event despite the ongoing session, prompting questions about whether Chaudhary’s decision stemmed from displeasure over the perceived slight. Party insiders indicated that the omission of his name from the event’s promotional material was viewed as neglect of an NDA constituent party leader.
Chaudhary, the grandson of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, played a crucial role in the RLD’s decision to align with the NDA ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. His absence at Wednesday’s ceremony has therefore attracted attention within political circles, with observers noting that the episode could signal underlying tensions within the alliance.
Event organisers have not commented on why the minister’s name was excluded from the advertisements. Meanwhile, the state government continued with the Pravasi Rajasthani Divas proceedings as scheduled, with other Union Ministers addressing the gathering.
