Kolkata is preparing for one of its largest spiritual gatherings as the Sanatan Sanskriti Sangha hosts a mega event, “Gita Chanting by Five Lakh Voices,” at the Brigade Parade Ground this Sunday. The organisers say the congregation, featuring prominent spiritual leaders including Baba Ramdev, Dhirendra Shastri of Bageshwar Dham, and Kartik Maharaj, aims to create a record for the biggest collective chanting of the Bhagavad Gita in India.
Cultural performances are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., followed by the main chanting session from 9 a.m. Security has been significantly increased across the Maidan area, with police deployment set to manage the anticipated crowd. Permission for the large-scale event has already been granted, and final preparations, including a vast central stage, are nearing completion.
Organisers expect an unprecedented turnout after last year’s smaller-scale “One Lakh Voices Gita Chanting” event drew a lukewarm response. This year, the Sangha, affiliated with the RSS, has mobilised monasteries, temples, educational institutions, and several social organisations to encourage participation.
Kartik Maharaj told reporters on Friday that invitations have been sent to several political leaders, including the West Bengal Chief Minister. “This initiative is meant to spread harmony and spiritual awareness. Bengal has a deep cultural and devotional legacy, and we hope this event reflects that spirit,” he said.
The congregation will be presided over by Swami Gyananandaji Maharaj of the Gita Manishi Mahamandal. Padma Bhushan recipient Sadhvi Rithambara will serve as chief guest, with Baba Ramdev attending as guest of honour and Dhirendra Shastri as special guest.
Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj noted that thousands of devotees from across the state have already pledged participation. “At a time marked by social divisions, spiritual discipline can serve as a stabilising force,” he said.
With five lakh voices expected to chant in unison, the event is being positioned as a landmark moment for Kolkata’s religious landscape and a renewed assertion of the region’s spiritual heritage.
