Lalsot BJP MLA Defends Confrontation with Electricity Vigilance Team Over Alleged Extortion

BJP MLA from Lalsot, Rambilas Meena (also referred to as Ramvilas Meena), has justified his intervention in a December 19 incident in Sisodia village, claiming he threatened electricity department officials to protect them from an angry mob accusing the team of illegal extortion.

Speaking at a dialogue programme in Dausa on December 25, Meena alleged the vigilance team was demanding money under the pretext of filing fake Vigilance Checking Reports (VCRs) for electricity theft. Villagers surrounded the team, and he arrived to de-escalate the situation.

"I intimidated the employees and calmed the villagers to free them," Meena said. He added that such illegal practices would not be tolerated in his constituency.

In a controversial directive to locals, he urged: if similar teams arrive, detain them, deflate vehicle tyres, tie them to a tree if necessary, and call him—he would reach within 10 minutes.

The incident stemmed from villagers' complaints of extortion during a routine check. The team was held for hours before Meena's arrival led to their release.

Meena's statements have sparked debate, with critics viewing them as encouraging vigilantism, while supporters see it as standing against alleged corruption.

As a first-time MLA, Meena has positioned himself against administrative overreach, but the episode raises questions about rule of law in handling disputes.
