Amidst the ongoing language dispute in Maharashtra, a fight over language has started in Assam too.

During the census in Assam, All Bodoland Territorial Council Minority Student Union leader Mainuddin Ali appealed to Muslims to write Bengali as their mother tongue instead of Assamese.

Himanta Biswa Sarma said this about Bengali language

After this appeal of the student leader, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday that writing Bengali as mother tongue in census documents will reveal the number of foreigners living in the state.

Assamese is the permanent official language of Assam

The Chief Minister described the Assamese language as the permanent official language of Assam and said that no one should use language as a tool for blackmailing. On the issue of language dispute, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assamese is the permanent official language of Assam. It has constitutional validity. Language cannot be taken as a weapon to blackmail.

He further said that even if they do not list Assamese as their mother tongue, it will not change the facts. However, if the community does not list Assamese as their mother tongue, it will only reveal how many illegal foreigners are in the state.

After this controversial statement of the student leader, the All Bodoland Territorial Council Minority has suspended him from the party. Along with this, the student leader has also apologized for his statement.

25 thousand acres of land freed from encroachment in four years

At the same time, claiming that the eviction drive is going on in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that more than 25 thousand acres of land has been freed from encroachment across the state in the last four years.

However, the Congress criticized the eviction drives and promised that all Indian citizens who were evicted from the land during the BJP rule will be given proper compensation if the opposition party comes to power in the state.
