With the West Bengal Assembly elections less than a year away, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday presented an expansive performance document titled “Unnoyoner Panchali,” outlining her government’s achievements across employment, infrastructure, welfare, and social sectors. The report was released during a state administrative meeting in Kolkata.
Banerjee claimed her administration has generated over two crore employment opportunities during the last 14.5 years, asserting that poverty levels have “substantially declined,” with 1.72 crore people rising above the poverty line by 2023. She said youth unemployment in the state has fallen by 40% and highlighted the development of six economic corridors with an investment potential of more than ₹2 lakh crore.
A significant portion of the presentation focused on the MSME sector, which the government says accounts for 1.3 crore jobs. Banerjee noted that Bengal leads the country in women-led enterprises, supported by 12 lakh self-help groups. She added that state tax revenue has risen 5.31 times since 2011, while agricultural production has grown more than ninefold.
Listing key welfare initiatives, the chief minister said 2.21 crore households receive Lakshmir Bhandar benefits, while one crore girls have been covered under Kanyashree. Rupashree has extended financial assistance to 22 lakh women for marriage. She also pointed to a sixfold rise in health expenditure, claiming 2.45 crore families are now insured under Swasthya Sathi. The state reports constructing 67.69 lakh homes, with a long-term target of one crore.
Banerjee accused the Centre of withholding funds for infrastructure, alleging dues of ₹1.87 lakh crore. She said the state has independently built 60,000 km of roads under Pathashree and advanced major projects such as the Gangasagar bridge and Ghatal Master Plan.
She added that 99 lakh households have piped drinking water, nine crore citizens are covered under food security, and 7.41 crore receive doorstep ration delivery. Emphasising cultural roots, Banerjee described Unnoyoner Panchali as a modern retelling of Bengal’s traditional folk narratives celebrating community progress.
