MLA Raises Objection Over Allocation of College Playground Land in Balotra; Students Protest

In the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly, Harish Choudhary, MLA from Baytu in Barmer district, has opposed the proposed allocation of land belonging to MBR Government PG College Balotra for construction of government offices, warning that the move could harm students’ future prospects.

Raising the matter through an adjournment motion under procedural rules, Choudhary urged the government to maintain the college land in its current status and reconsider the decision. He stated that the issue concerns thousands of students and directly affects educational development in the region.

According to details presented in the House, the college campus spans roughly 85 bighas, of which about 29 bighas have been proposed or allocated for other government purposes. Nearly 24 bighas lie within the campus boundary and were reserved for sports facilities, while around 5 bighas are located outside the main compound near a roadway.

The legislator argued that college land is not meant solely for present needs but must also accommodate future expansion, including new academic departments, laboratories, sports infrastructure, NCC units, and career-oriented courses such as agriculture and law. Diverting such land now, he said, could restrict long-term institutional growth and reduce essential student facilities.

Choudhary also questioned why authorities selected the college premises when other government land is reportedly available near Balotra headquarters. He described the decision as one that warrants reconsideration in the public interest.

Students have reportedly been protesting against the proposed allocation, leading to rising tensions in the area. The MLA called on the state government to prioritise student welfare and issue directions to keep the college property intact.

The matter is expected to draw further political and administrative attention as stakeholders push for a review of the land use plan.
