UP Leaders Dominate Bihar Poll Campaign: Yogi, Akhilesh, and Ajay Rai in High Demand as Parties Tap Cross-Border Influence

As election fever grips Bihar, political activity in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh has surged, with several of its top leaders becoming the face of campaign trails across Bihar’s constituencies. From the BJP’s Yogi Adityanath to the SP’s Akhilesh Yadav and Congress’s Ajay Rai, parties are deploying their most influential figures from UP to strengthen their reach in the 243-seat Bihar Assembly polls.

Although no party is contesting all seats independently, the presence of heavyweight campaigners from Uttar Pradesh has intensified the fight between the NDA and INDIA alliances, turning the polls into a high-stakes regional showdown.

Yogi Adityanath Leads BJP’s Bihar Blitz

At the forefront of the BJP campaign is Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, whose sharp rhetoric and Hindutva appeal continue to draw massive crowds. Yogi has already held multiple rallies in Bihar, including in Siwan on October 29, energising the party’s ground-level workers.

Joining him in the campaign are Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, as well as senior leaders Swatantra Dev Singh, Mahendra Singh, and several UP MLAs. Each has been assigned key constituencies to manage booth-level mobilisation and organisational coordination.

Keshav Prasad Maurya, appointed co-in-charge for Bihar, is holding daily rallies and reviewing local-level preparations to ensure seamless coordination between the Bihar and UP BJP units.

Akhilesh Yadav Strengthens INDIA Bloc With Tejashwi and Rahul

On the opposition front, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav is emerging as one of the most sought-after campaigners for the INDIA alliance. He will begin his Bihar rallies on November 1, sharing the stage with RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and, at select events, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Interestingly, the SP is not contesting any seats in Bihar, yet Akhilesh has pledged full support to Tejashwi, symbolising a unified INDIA bloc strategy. SP insiders say his presence is especially crucial in Yadav-dominated constituencies.

More than a dozen SP MPs and senior leaders — including Afzal Ansari, Awadhesh Prasad, Babu Singh Kushwaha, Naresh Uttam Patel, Ramashankar Vidyarthi Rajbhar, Lalji Verma, and Chhote Lal Kharwar — are also campaigning vigorously for RJD and Congress candidates to consolidate backward caste and minority votes.

Ajay Rai Leads Congress’s Bihar Push

The Congress has similarly brought in its leadership from Uttar Pradesh to boost its Bihar campaign. UP Congress President Ajay Rai, who once contested against PM Modi in Varanasi, has been appointed as a star campaigner.

Under his leadership, senior Congress figures such as Avinash Pandey, Ajay Kumar Lallu, Tanuj Punia, Pradeep Jain, and Sanjay Kapoor have been given specific coordination and strategy roles in Bihar.

In an innovative outreach strategy, the party has paired 20 UP district units with 20 Bihar districts to enhance ground-level coordination. For instance, Varanasi has been linked with Buxar, Ayodhya with Patna, Kaushambi with Nalanda, and Mirzapur with Gaya — fostering closer logistical and cultural ties between the regions.

Cultural and Linguistic Ties Boost Cross-Border Campaigning

Campaigners from Uttar Pradesh, especially from Eastern UP, share deep linguistic and cultural similarities with the people of Bihar — a factor proving advantageous on the ground. Many families in Purvanchal have relatives across Bihar, helping leaders tap into familiar networks for local outreach.

As SP spokesperson Ameek Jamei noted,

“Campaigners from Eastern UP are in great demand. Their shared language, cultural familiarity, and emotional connection with Bihar’s voters help them build trust quickly.”

With just days left before the first phase of polling, both the NDA and INDIA blocs are betting heavily on their UP allies to influence voter sentiment — making this Bihar election as much a cross-border political battle as a test of regional alliances.
