Now money and free electricity for Kanwariyas; Rekha Gupta government took 2 big decisions on Kanwar Yatra in Delhi

On June 24, 2025, CM Rekha Gupta unveiled two major Kanwar Yatra measures: direct DBT grants of ₹50,000–₹10 lakh to registered Kanwar committees and free electricity (up to 1,200 units) for Kanwar camps.

The Bharatiya Janata Party government of Delhi has taken two important decisions for the Kanwar Yatra during Sawan. In the cabinet meeting held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, it was decided that the financial assistance for the necessary arrangements for the Kanwariyas will now be provided directly to the Kanwar Sanghs, the amount of which will range from Rs 50 thousand to Rs 10 lakh. Along with this, free electricity facility will also be provided in the camps.

CM Rekha Gupta, while giving information about the decisions related to the Kanwar Yatra after the cabinet meeting, called it a historic step. He said that earlier there was a problem of corruption in this process, so it has been decided to change it. Now the Kanwar committees will be provided funds directly.

The CM said that the committees engaged in the service of Shiva devotees during the Kanwar Yatra will now be given funds directly through Direct Benefit Transfer. All this money will be given to the concerned organizations, which will be provided by the Delhi government. There will be no contractor or tender process; only registered organizations will be able to apply for this assistance. They will apply at the DM office, and we have also implemented a single window system, so that they will not have to run around for various approvals. All the necessary NOCs will be made available at one place within 72 hours.

Gupta said that in the past years, governments had made this work a center of corruption in the name of serving Kanwariyas. Tenders were issued for tents and other facilities in Delhi, but only 2-3 people would get the tender for the entire city and then distribute it among other organizations. Many times, the organizations were told to make arrangements on their own, while the government assured them of money. The government used to spend lakhs in this process, but the public did not get any benefit from it. The question arises that where did this money go.

He said that recently in a meeting with some Kanwar committees, their problems were discussed. The committees informed that many tents were not erected even on the last day, whereas it does not take much time to erect waterproof tents. Tenders were issued by the government, but often the tenders were not picked up or were awarded at low rates. In this process, the committees had to wait for the contractor to be allotted to them and the work to begin. Thus, the assistance provided by the government became useless for them. The previous governments did not make any effort to improve this system.MONSOON UPDATE (7)
