Pappu Yadav Remains in Jail as Bail Hearing Deferred Amid Court Bomb Threat, Protests Spread Nationwide

Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, will continue to remain in judicial custody after his bail hearing was postponed on Monday following a bomb threat email received by the Patna Civil Court. The threat led to the evacuation of the MP-MLA court premises, preventing the hearing from taking place. Yadav is currently lodged in Patna’s Beur Central Jail.

The hearing, scheduled in connection with a 31-year-old criminal case, could not proceed due to security concerns triggered by the email threat. Court officials confirmed that standard emergency protocols were activated and proceedings were suspended for the day. A new date for the bail hearing is expected to be announced once security agencies complete their assessment.

Earlier in the day, Yadav underwent a mandatory medical examination at Patna Medical College and Hospital before being shifted to Beur jail. Hospital superintendent Dr Rajiv Kumar stated that the MP was found medically fit. Visuals showed Yadav lying inside an ambulance during the transfer, sparking political reactions from supporters.

The postponement has intensified protests across Bihar and the national capital. In Patna, Congress workers and supporters gathered near Sadakat Ashram, raising slogans against the Nitish Kumar-led state government and demanding Yadav’s immediate release. Protesters burned posters and an effigy of the chief minister, alleging political vendetta behind the arrest.

Simultaneously, demonstrations were held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where supporters linked Yadav’s arrest to his activism in the NEET student case. The victim’s mother and family members joined the protest, calling for justice and accusing authorities of attempting to silence voices critical of the administration.

Yadav has been vocal in highlighting alleged lapses in the treatment of a NEET aspirant, releasing purported audio recordings and repeatedly targeting the state administration over accountability. After raising the issue in Bihar, he recently took the matter to the national stage, staging protests near Parliament and planning a demonstration in Delhi.

According to police officials, Yadav was arrested late Friday night in connection with a decades-old case, just hours before his proposed protest at Jantar Mantar. His supporters claim the timing reflects political pressure, while the administration maintains the arrest followed due legal process.

The case has now acquired wider political significance, with opposition parties closely watching the court’s next move. The outcome of the bail hearing, whenever it is rescheduled, is expected to influence both the legal trajectory of the case and the broader political narrative surrounding Yadav’s arrest.
