Congress leader and party National General Secretary Sachin Pilot on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of misusing constitutional institutions for political gain, alleging that the Election Commission has failed to maintain neutrality amid irregularities in the voter verification process.
Speaking to reporters in Jaipur, Pilot claimed that the SIR (Special Identification Revision) process in Bihar had exposed large-scale discrepancies, where “living voters were listed as dead” and names of deceased individuals were included in electoral rolls. He further alleged that in some areas, “over 250 votes were registered from a single household,” calling it a case of “blatant political collusion.”
Pilot asserted that the Congress would not tolerate such irregularities and has directed party workers, MLAs, and local leaders to verify voter lists within their constituencies to ensure transparency and compliance with Election Commission guidelines.
Citing Rahul Gandhi’s recent claims of “vote theft” in Haryana and Maharashtra, Pilot questioned why the Election Commission has yet to launch an inquiry despite “factual evidence” presented by the Congress. “Instead of acting, the Commission is asking Rahul Gandhi for an affidavit. This shows bias and an unwillingness to uphold its constitutional duty,” he said.
Pilot emphasised that the Election Commission must act independently and not serve the political interests of any party. “The atmosphere in the country demands fairness. We only want genuine scrutiny so that no false entries or omissions distort democracy,” he added.
Announcing the party’s next move, Pilot revealed that the Congress will hold a major rally in Delhi later this month, marking the culmination of its nationwide “Vote Thief, Leave the Throne” campaign aimed at highlighting alleged electoral malpractices and demanding accountability from constitutional institutions.
