From Gujarat Chief Minister to Prime Minister
Modi first became Chief Minister of Gujarat on October 7, 2001. He remained in the post until May 2014, when he moved to national politics after leading the BJP to a majority in the 2014 Lok Sabha election.
He took oath as the Prime Minister of India on May 26, 2014. He subsequently returned to office after the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, becoming the first Prime Minister from outside the Congress to complete two full terms and then begin a third consecutive term.
His combined tenure at the state and national levels eventually took him past Chamling’s record of 8,930 days.

On June 10, 2026, Modi became India's longest-serving elected Prime Minister in terms of continuous tenure in the office. He completed 4,399 days as an elected Prime Minister, surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru's previous record of 4,398 days.
The distinction is important: the March record counted Modi's combined service as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister, while the June record concerned his uninterrupted tenure as Prime Minister.
