President – Indian Overseas Youth Congress Australia On the Theft of Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue in Melbourne
Statement by Gurjinder Singh “Gavy,”
It is deeply saddening to learn about the incident in Melbourne where the statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been stolen. This is not just a loss for the Indian community, but for all those around the world who believe in peace, truth, and non-violence.
Mahatma Gandhi was not only a leader of India’s freedom struggle; he was a global symbol of humanity. His message of truth (Satya) and non-violence (Ahimsa) inspired movements for civil rights and justice across continents. From India to Africa, from the United States to Europe, his philosophy shaped leaders, nations, and generations. Gandhi belongs to the world, not to one country alone.
As the newly appointed President of the Indian Overseas Youth Congress Australia, I feel personally hurt by this incident. For many of us living away from our homeland, symbols like Mahatma Gandhi’s statue represent our values, our identity, and our connection to the ideals that shaped modern India.
I have always considered myself a humble follower of Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings. His life reminds us that real strength lies not in power or position, but in service, humility, and standing for what is right. Gandhi taught the world that even the simplest person, armed with truth and courage, can bring about historic change.
In a personal way, I feel a deep connection to Bapu, as nature has given me a special sign—I was born on 2nd October, the same day as Mahatma Gandhi. For me, this is not just a coincidence, but a reminder of the values I must carry forward in my life: truth, simplicity, service, and compassion.
This unfortunate incident should not divide communities. Instead, it should remind us why Gandhi’s message is still relevant today. At a time when the world faces conflict, hatred, and division, the values of peace, tolerance, and compassion are more important than ever.
I urge authorities to take swift action and ensure that the statue is recovered or restored at the earliest. More importantly, I appeal to everyone to respect symbols of peace and heritage, regardless of culture or nationality.
Mahatma Gandhi’s ideas cannot be stolen. His message lives in the hearts of millions around the world. As young leaders and members of the Indian diaspora, it is our duty to carry forward his vision of unity, peace, and humanity.
Let this moment strengthen our resolve to follow the path of truth and non-violence.
