Rift Widens in Lalu Family as Rohini Acharya Quits Politics, Recalls 2002 Wedding That Symbolised Power

The long-standing image of unity within the Lalu Prasad Yadav family fractured sharply this week after Rohini Acharya, the RJD chief’s second daughter, announced her exit from politics and distanced herself from the family, alleging humiliation and lack of accountability in party leadership. The development has revived memories of the family’s political influence at its peak, most notably during Rohini’s extravagant 2002 wedding, which had become a symbol of the RJD regime’s muscle and reach.

Rohini declared her decision on November 15, posting on X that she had “no family left,” before leaving Rabri Devi’s Patna residence for Delhi. Speaking at the airport, she accused her brother and former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav of sidelining her. “Ask Tejashwi now. If you question anything, you will be abused,” she said, also naming his advisors Sanjay Yadav and Rameez Nemat.

Her emotional statement continued the next day in Delhi, where she said her parents were in tears but unable to intervene. Lalu Prasad, when asked later, termed the matter an “internal family issue” and said it would be resolved privately.

Rohini’s public outburst has resurfaced scrutiny of the excessive display of power during her wedding on May 24, 2002. The event, spread over 20 acres near the chief minister’s residence, witnessed more than 25,000 guests, a Bihar Military Police chariot, heavy security deployment and, as reported at the time, alleged coercion of traders. Car showrooms, furniture shops and sweet shops had complained that goods were taken in the name of “Lalu ji’s daughter’s wedding.” Reports from that period claimed RJD supporters forcibly took over 50 unregistered vehicles to ferry VIP guests.

Rohini now lives in Singapore with her husband, Samresh Singh. In 2022, she donated a kidney to Lalu Prasad, a gesture that strengthened her public image as the devoted daughter of the RJD patriarch.

Her departure from politics, amid accusations of unfair treatment within the party, has deepened questions over internal cohesion as the RJD grapples with electoral setbacks and leadership strain.
