Police on Wednesday arrested another accused in connection with the vandalism at Yuva Bharati Krirangan, taking the total number of arrests in the case to six. The latest arrest comes amid an ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and mounting political pressure from the opposition over the incident linked to a high-profile football event.
The accused, identified as Rupak Mondal, a resident of the Chingrighata area near EM Bypass, was traced through CCTV footage from the stadium premises, police sources said. Investigators had earlier arrested five others — Basudeb Das, Sanjay Das, Abhijit Das, Gaurab Basu and Subhrapratim Dey — all of whom were identified through surveillance footage recorded on the day of the incident.
Meanwhile, a four-member SIT constituted by the state police visited Yuva Bharati on Wednesday morning to conduct an on-site inspection. The team, comprising senior IPS officers, examined the damaged sections of the stadium before moving to the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, located adjacent to the venue. Officials did not issue a statement following the inspection.
The vandalism occurred on Saturday after unrest broke out during an event associated with football star Lionel Messi’s visit to Kolkata. Spectators alleged mismanagement, claiming they paid high ticket prices but were unable to get a clear view of Messi, Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, who were reportedly on the field for a brief period. As crowds surrounded the players on the ground, anger mounted in the galleries, culminating in damage to hoardings and other property after the players exited.
Police have also arrested the main organiser of the programme, Shatadru Dutta, in connection with the disorder.
Later in the day, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited the stadium and staged a protest, demanding the arrest of state ministers Aroop Biswas and Sujit Bose. He rejected the state government’s enquiry committee, calling instead for an impartial investigation.
Following the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had set up a probe committee headed by retired Justice Asim Kumar Ray. Based on its preliminary findings, the state police formed the SIT to carry forward the investigation.
