SLST Protest in Kolkata Turns Violent as Candidates Clash with Police

Kolkata witnessed tense scenes on Monday as newly qualified candidates for Work and Physical Education posts clashed with police during a protest march from Sealdah to Dharmatala. The demonstrators, demanding reforms in the SLST recruitment process, broke through police barricades along S.N. Banerjee Road, leading to chaotic confrontations

The protest escalated when officers attempted to stop the procession mid-route. Candidates, alleging their grievances were ignored, pressed forward despite repeated warnings. Sources reported that some participants threatened law enforcement, asserting they would “show what a movement really means,” forcing police to deploy additional personnel to contain the crowd.

Protesters specifically called for the cancellation of the additional 10-mark weightage given to experienced candidates, an increase in vacancies, and greater transparency in recruitment. As tensions mounted, multiple clashes occurred along central Kolkata’s busy thoroughfares, disrupting traffic and creating safety concerns for commuters.

The rally culminated in a sit-in demonstration at Dharmatala. Attempts by police to disperse the group led to another round of confrontations, blocking traffic and causing gridlock. Several participants were detained and transported in prison vans, while some candidates alleged police excesses, with a few breaking down in tears or lying on the road in protest.

Authorities confirmed that additional forces were deployed to restore order, and the situation was eventually brought under control, though the city centre remained tense well into the evening.

SLST aspirants have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are addressed. The protest underscores growing discontent among job seekers regarding recruitment procedures and the allocation of marks for experience, highlighting the challenges facing authorities in managing large-scale demonstrations while ensuring public safety.

The police and government have yet to release an official statement regarding the next steps to address the candidates’ concerns, leaving the future of the agitation uncertain.
