Tharoor’s Remark Sparks Discomfort in Congress

As Congress targets the government over Trump’s tariff policies, MP Shashi Tharoor’s unexpected statement has stirred unease within the party ranks.

US President Donald Trump has announced a 25 percent tariff on India. Apart from this, he has also talked about imposing a fine on India. After Trump's tariff announcement, politics in the country has heated up. The opposition has got an opportunity to corner the government without doing anything. However, BJP leaders say that the government will deal with this issue in an appropriate manner.

After Trump's tariff announcement, many Congress leaders asked many questions to the government. Meanwhile, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's comment has also come to the fore. He clearly said that we have a good and strong domestic market. We should give full support to our negotiators to find the best possible deal. This statement of Tharoor is definitely a little different from other Congress leaders.

Speaking to news agency ANI in the Parliament premises, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that this is a challenging dialogue. We are in talks with many countries. The US is not the only country we are in talks with. We are in talks with the EU, we have reached an agreement with the UK, and we are in talks with other countries as well. If we cannot compete in the US, we may have to diversify our markets outside the US.

'We have our own domestic market'

Tharoor further said that we have no choice. If the US is completely unreasonable in its demands, we will have to go elsewhere. This is India's strength; we are not a completely export-dependent economy like China. We have a good and strong domestic market. We should give full support to our negotiators to find the best possible deal. If a good deal is not possible, we may have to back out.
