Tharoor Clarifies on Congress Stance, Defends Operation Sindoor Position

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday asserted that he has not opposed the party’s official stand in Parliament at any stage. Speaking at the Kerala Literature Festival in Kozhikode, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said his only public disagreement on principle pertained to Operation Sindoor. He reiterated that he would not apologise for his views expressed in a recent Indian Express article.

“India should focus on development and not get entangled in a prolonged conflict with Pakistan. Any action should be limited to terrorist camps,” Tharoor said, underlining that his stance was aimed at safeguarding national interests rather than opposing party policy.

The Operation Sindoor debate arose after Tharoor authored an article emphasizing that the Pahalgam attack must not go unpunished. His comments drew attention in both media and political circles, prompting questions about his alignment with the Congress position. Tharoor clarified that his views were a matter of principle and did not contradict the party’s policies in Parliament.

Tharoor also referenced India’s historical approach to national security, citing former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru: “If India dies, who will live? He meant that when it comes to the country’s security and its position in the world, India comes first.” He stressed that political differences should not compromise the nation’s strategic interests.

The MP highlighted that acknowledging past mistakes is necessary but should not become a tool for disproportionate blame. “It is necessary to acknowledge Nehru’s mistakes, but blaming him for every problem is completely wrong and unfair,” Tharoor said, referring to remarks made earlier at the Kerala Legislative Assembly International Book Festival on January 9.

Tharoor’s recent statements consistently underline his commitment to the national interest over partisan considerations. On January 1 in Sultan Bathery, he reiterated, “I never deviated from the party line. When I expressed my views on various subjects, the party and I were on the same line.” He also defended government actions on illegal immigrants, emphasizing border security and proper immigration management.

Tharoor’s remarks come amid heightened political debate on foreign policy and security issues, with the MP advocating a balanced approach that prioritizes India’s strategic interests over political point-scoring. Analysts suggest that his stance reflects a broader trend within the Congress of separating national security concerns from party politics.
