The Delhi High Court has given a stern warning to the Rekha Gupta government over the pathetic condition of consumer courts in the national capital. During the hearing of a PIL on Thursday, May 15, the High Court has directed the Delhi government to submit a detailed report on the issue.
A petitioner raised the issue of the pathetic condition of consumer courts before the Delhi High Court. In the petition, he sought an order to immediately provide essential infrastructure like video conferencing (VC) facility, drinking water and toilets in the district consumer courts.
The bench of Delhi High Court Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyay and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela took the matter seriously and directed the Delhi government to submit a detailed affidavit within three weeks. Along with this, the petitioner has been given two weeks to file a reply. The next hearing of this case will be on September 17.

In Delhi High Court, lawyer S.B. Tripathi presented a petition in view of the pathetic condition of district courts. He alleged that since Covid-19, the facility of hearing through video conferencing has been completely discontinued in 10 district consumer courts of Delhi.
In the petition, it was told to Delhi High Court that not only lawyers are facing difficulties due to this, but it is also becoming difficult for common consumers to reach the courts. In response to an RTI, three consumer commissions clarified that they do not have video conferencing facility available, and 5G network is required for this.

In the petition filed in Delhi High Court, it has been mentioned that there is no provision of pure drinking water or toilets for the advocates and general public in the District Consumer Courts. Despite the previous orders of the court, these essential facilities are being seriously ignored, as a result of which people are facing humiliating circumstances.
Petitioner S.B. Tripathi has requested that judicial officers should be appointed immediately in all the District Consumer Commissions. This will enable regular hearing of pending cases and there will be no hindrance in the judicial process.
