The third day of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly’s winter session on Tuesday was marked by protests, intense debates, and dramatic visuals both inside and outside the House. Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Atul Pradhan drew attention by arriving at the Assembly premises on a tractor, underscoring his party’s protest against government policies.
Inside the Assembly, SP MLA Ragini Sonkar raised concerns over the recent deaths of Booth Level Officers (BLOs), asking, “What has the government turned teachers into?” Her remarks prompted Speaker Satish Mahana to intervene, cautioning members against speaking out of turn without naming any MLA directly.
Meanwhile, the Legislative Council witnessed a sharp exchange between Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and Leader of the Opposition Lal Bihari Yadav over the alleged misuse of codeine-containing cough syrup. SP MLC Shahnawaz Khan also targeted the government, demanding accountability and highlighting lapses in oversight.
The debate over Vande Mataram further heightened tensions in the Council. Members expressed differing views on the anthem’s role and significance, reflecting ongoing discussions about cultural and legislative responsibilities.
Security and order within the House were closely maintained by Assembly officials as the protests continued. Lawmakers emphasized public accountability and procedural propriety while criticizing government measures on education and public health.
Political observers noted that Tuesday’s session highlighted growing opposition unrest and the ruling party’s challenge in managing dissenting voices during legislative proceedings. The tractor protest by Atul Pradhan was seen as a symbolic representation of agrarian and grassroots grievances that continue to influence state politics.
The Assembly is scheduled to continue its winter session over the coming days, with key discussions expected on education reforms, health policies, and governance issues. Analysts suggest that debates over public health controversies, such as the codeine syrup issue, are likely to remain a central focus of legislative scrutiny.
