Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday spoke directly to the father of Angel Chakma, the 22-year-old Tripura student killed in a racist attack, promising strict action as five suspects were arrested and a manhunt continued for the sixth.
Dhami described the incident as "deeply distressing" and assured Tarun Prasad Chakma of full support. "I fully understand the pain the family is going through," he said, revealing a reward for information on the absconding accused, believed to have fled to Nepal.
Angel, a final-year MBA student at Jigyasa University, died December 26 after weeks in ICU. His brother Michael said a group taunted them with slurs like "Chinese" and "Chinky" in Selaqui market before a brutal assault involving knives and metal bracelets.Five men face arrest; raids are ongoing.
Dhami informed Union ministers and Tripura CM Manik Saha, emphasizing Uttarakhand's safety for students nationwide. Rahul Gandhi called it a "horrific hate crime," blaming BJP's "hate-driven leadership" for normalizing prejudice. The case has sparked outrage over racial discrimination against Northeast Indians.
