Onam is one of Kerala's most important festivals and is celebrated during the Malayalam month of Chingam. The festival is traditionally associated with the legendary King Mahabali and is marked by floral decorations, elaborate vegetarian feasts, cultural performances, temple visits and community gatherings.

According to the timings provided for Ujjain, the Thiruvonam Nakshatra begins at 10:51 PM on August 25 and ends at 12:47 AM on August 27. On August 26, sunrise is at 6:19 AM and sunset is at 6:33 PM.

Onam 2026 Date And Timings

The main Onam celebration, Thiruvonam, will be observed on August 26, 2026.

The Thiruvonam Nakshatra begins at 10:51 PM on August 25 and ends at 12:47 AM on August 27, according to the Ujjain-based timings provided.

Onam is traditionally celebrated over ten days, beginning with Atham and culminating in Thiruvonam. In 2026, the first Onam is observed on August 25, followed by Thiruvonam on August 26, the third Onam on August 27 and the fourth Onam on August 28.

Why Onam Is Celebrated

Onam is traditionally connected with the story of King Mahabali, a ruler remembered for his generosity, prosperity and just administration.

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Vishnu appeared before Mahabali in the form of Vamana. The story describes how Vamana eventually sent Mahabali to the netherworld while granting him permission to return to Kerala once every year.

Onam celebrates this annual return of Mahabali. The festival also carries associations with harvest, prosperity, gratitude and community togetherness.

Pookalam And Onasadya

Pookalam, the traditional floral decoration, is one of the most recognisable features of Onam celebrations. Families create colourful flower designs at the entrance of their homes, with the arrangements traditionally becoming larger and more elaborate as the festival progresses towards Thiruvonam.

Another central tradition is Onasadya, a vegetarian feast traditionally served on a banana leaf.

The elaborate meal can include dishes such as sambar, aviyal, olan, thoran, pachadi, pickles, papad and different varieties of payasam. Families and communities often gather together to share the feast.

Traditional Onam Celebrations

Onam celebrations extend beyond homes and temples to include traditional sports, dances and cultural programmes.

Vallam Kali, or snake boat racing, is among Kerala's most famous Onam traditions. Long boats carrying teams of rowers compete in races accompanied by traditional songs and music, particularly in areas around the state's backwaters.

Other cultural traditions include Thiruvathira Kali and Pulikali. Temple visits and special prayers are also important parts of the festival, with the Thrikkakara Vamana Temple traditionally associated with the Mahabali legend.

Onam Festival And Kerala

Although Onam has deep roots in Kerala's religious and cultural traditions, it is celebrated across communities and has become an important expression of Kerala's cultural identity.

Homes, temples and public spaces are decorated during the festival, while cultural programmes and community events bring people together.

The themes of prosperity, equality, gratitude and togetherness remain central to the traditional understanding of Onam.
