Devotees across India are observing Vaisakha Purnima 2026 on Friday, marking one of the most spiritually significant full moon days in the Hindu and Buddhist calendars. The day, which also coincides with Buddha Purnima, has drawn early morning temple visits, fasting rituals, and community prayers in several parts of the country.

According to traditional Panchang calculations, the Purnima tithi began at 9:13 pm on April 30 and will continue until 10:53 pm on May 1. Religious activities are expected to peak through the evening hours, especially during moonrise.

Early morning observances

In cities such as Varanasi, Ujjain, and Bhopal, devotees were seen gathering at riverbanks and temples before sunrise. Many began the day with a ritual bath, considered an essential act of purification on Purnima.

Local priests said the early hours are believed to be particularly auspicious for sankalp (vow-taking) and vrat observance. “People prefer to start their fasts after sunrise and continue till moonrise,” a temple official in Ujjain noted.

Fasting and puja rituals

The Purnima vrat is being widely observed, with devotees either fasting completely or consuming light sattvik food such as fruits and milk. Households are also conducting Satyanarayan puja, a common ritual associated with prosperity and well-being.

Sources familiar with temple arrangements said special prayer sessions and bhajans have been organised throughout the day. In some places, community feasts and charitable food distribution are also underway.

Buddha Purnima significance

This year’s Vaisakha Purnima holds added importance as it commemorates the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Gautama Buddha. Buddhist monasteries and centres have reported increased footfall since morning.

Monks and followers are engaging in meditation sessions, scripture readings, and teachings focused on compassion and mindfulness. “The day is about reflection and inner clarity,” a monk at a Buddhist centre in central India said.

Moon worship in evening

As per tradition, devotees will perform Chandra puja after moonrise, offering water (arghya) to the Moon God. The moon is considered a symbol of emotional balance and calmness in Hindu belief.

Evening prayers are expected to be held in temples and homes, with families gathering for collective rituals. The full moon phase is believed to amplify spiritual energy, making prayers more impactful, according to religious scholars.

Charity and community efforts

Charitable acts form a key part of Purnima observances. Several organisations and individuals have arranged food distribution drives, clothing donations, and other forms of seva on the occasion.

In some areas, volunteers were seen distributing meals near temples and public spaces since late morning. “Acts of charity today are considered especially meritorious,” said a local organiser involved in a food donation drive.

Cultural and regional variations

While the broader significance remains similar, regional traditions vary. In Tamil Nadu, the day is observed as Chitra Pournami, while in Buddhist communities it is celebrated as Vesak.

Despite these differences, the core emphasis on spiritual discipline, charity, and reflection remains consistent across traditions.

Looking ahead

With the Purnima tithi ending late tonight, religious activities are expected to continue through the evening. Authorities in major temple towns have made arrangements to manage crowds and ensure smooth conduct of rituals.

The next Purnima in May 2026 is scheduled for May 31, known as Adhik Maas Purnima, which also carries its own religious importance.
