‘Our Women Are Breaking Stereotypes’: President Murmu Highlights Women’s Role, Economic Growth in Republic Day Eve Address

President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday said Indian women are breaking long-standing stereotypes and playing an increasingly decisive role in the country’s development, as she addressed the nation on the eve of the 77th Republic Day. In a wide-ranging speech, the President also praised India’s rapid economic growth, democratic participation, and efforts to strengthen national unity amid global uncertainty.

Delivering the customary address broadcast nationwide on Doordarshan and Akashvani, Murmu said women’s participation across sectors has expanded significantly, contributing to social and economic transformation. “Our women are forging ahead and actively contributing to the overall development of the country,” she said, noting that more than 10 crore women associated with self-help groups are reshaping grassroots development models.

Highlighting economic progress, the President said India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy despite global challenges. “We are recording sustained growth and moving steadily towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy in the near future,” she said, crediting policy continuity, public participation, and technology-driven governance for improving ease of living and direct delivery of benefits to beneficiaries.

Murmu underscored the strength of India’s democratic institutions, recalling that January 25 is observed as National Voters’ Day. She said active voter participation reflects political awareness envisioned by Constitution-maker Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who viewed the right to vote as central to democratic education.

The President also paid tribute to the Constitution, describing it as the foundational document of the world’s largest republic. She said its ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity continue to guide the nation and reinforce unity. “Every effort to keep the forms of national unity alive is commendable,” she added, referring to the ongoing celebrations marking 150 years of the composition of Vande Mataram.

Addressing social development, Murmu cited progress in health and education initiatives, including the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission, under which over six crore screenings have been conducted. She noted that nearly 1.4 lakh students are enrolled in Eklavya Model Residential Schools, with many performing strongly in competitive examinations, helping bridge gaps in tribal education.

She praised the armed forces, police, and central armed police forces for safeguarding national security, and acknowledged farmers for ensuring food security. Murmu also said India continues to spread a message of peace globally amid conflicts elsewhere.

On the eve of Republic Day, the government announced 131 Padma Awards for 2026, including Padma Vibhushan honours for five personalities. The address concluded with a call to reflect on the nation’s past, present, and future as citizens in India and abroad prepare to celebrate Republic Day with fervour.
