Former domestic worker held for murder of IRS officer's daughter in South Delhi; accused also suspected in Rajasthan rape case hours earlier

A 19-year-old former domestic help was arrested from a Dwarka hotel on Tuesday in connection with the brutal murder of a 22-year-old woman and her alleged sexual assault in South Delhi's Kailash Hills area. The victim, daughter of an Internal Revenue Service officer, was found strangled in her terrace study room where she had been preparing for UPSC examinations. Delhi Police traced the accused through digital evidence including a stolen mobile phone and Instagram chats, officials said. The case took a disturbing turn after investigators found he allegedly committed a similar crime in Rajasthan just 12 hours before the Delhi incident.

COLD-BLOODED PLAN UNFOLDS

The accused, identified as Rahul Meena, exploited his familiarity with the victim's household routine and security lapses to execute the crime. Having worked at the residence previously, Meena was aware that the family left for gym sessions every morning. He knew the location of the duplicate key kept outside for domestic staff use. On April 21 morning, around 6:30 am, he used this key to enter the house while the victim remained alone. Her parents were away at their gymnasium during the time of the incident, allowing him unrestricted access to the residence.

HOW INVESTIGATORS CRACKED THE CASE

Digital evidence formed the backbone of the investigation that led to Meena's swift arrest. Police recovered CCTV footage showing him entering the house in black trousers and a yellow shirt, later exiting around 7:15 am wearing white trousers with the same shirt, carrying a bag containing stolen items. The breakthrough came through a stolen mobile phone he had used to access the internet via hotel Wi-Fi. Investigators tracked Instagram chats on the device that helped establish his location and movements. Officials said Meena deliberately avoided using his personal phone after fleeing the crime scene, banking on anonymity. The coordinated operation by multiple police teams across South Delhi led to his apprehension within 24 hours.

SEXUAL ASSAULT AND BRUTAL MURDER

Police suspect Meena sexually assaulted the victim before strangling her using a mobile phone charging cable. A broken lamp was recovered near the body, and investigators believe she was also attacked with a heavy object, though no bloodstains were found on it. The mobile charging wire used in the crime is being examined by forensic teams. The victim was discovered in her study room on the terrace where she spent hours preparing for competitive examinations. Her UPSC aspirations and engineering degree from IIT Delhi marked her as a driven student with a promising future ahead.

LOOTING AND ATTEMPTED FINGERPRINT FRAUD

After committing the murder, Meena went on to search the house for valuables, acting with calculated deliberation. He attempted to unlock a locker belonging to the victim using her fingerprint, a technique suggesting some awareness of modern security systems. When this failed, he forced the locker open and fled with approximately ₹2 lakh in cash and jewellery. Police have since recovered the stolen items from his possession. CCTV cameras installed at the entry gate of the victim's room were linked to the mobile phones of both the victim and her father, providing crucial visual evidence of his movements throughout the crime.

GAMING ADDICTION AND FINANCIAL DESPERATION

According to Joint Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar, Meena's descent into crime was triggered by addiction to online gaming and mounting financial pressures. He had borrowed substantial sums from other domestic workers in the neighbourhood and failed to repay them. The situation escalated when complaints reached the IRS officer, leading to Meena's dismissal from his job approximately six weeks ago over a financial dispute. Investigators believe he returned to the residence with the intention of robbery, which escalated into the heinous crime. This pattern of financial trouble and desperation appears consistent with his criminal behaviour in the days preceding the arrest.

RAJASTHAN RAPE CASE CONNECTS THE DOTS

The investigation took a darker turn as police discovered Meena's suspected involvement in a rape case in Rajasthan's Alwar district, reported on the night of April 21, just hours before the Delhi murder. According to Rajasthan Police, he allegedly entered the house of a married woman in the Rajgarh police station area and sexually assaulted her after issuing threats. The woman reported that Meena had initially offered her husband a ride on his motorcycle to a wedding function and later returned to the house alone, where he allegedly perpetrated the assault. The stolen mobile phone recovered in Delhi is believed to be from this Alwar incident. Delhi Police are coordinating with their Rajasthan counterparts as both investigations proceed in parallel.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS MOURN TALENTED YOUNG WOMAN

Greater Kailash MLA Shikha Roy released a statement describing the victim as an exceptionally talented and bright young woman. "I have known her personally for many years and have seen her grow up as an honest, disciplined and exceptionally talented girl," Roy said in her remarks. The victim had completed her engineering degree from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and was pursuing UPSC preparation with full dedication. Those close to her remember her as an accomplished dancer who actively participated in cultural activities on campus. She was known for her humble nature and commitment to excellence in all her endeavours, marking her as a promising individual whose future was abruptly cut short.

Delhi courts have sent Meena to a four-day police custody as investigators continue gathering forensic evidence and digital data. The stolen mobile phone, CCTV footage, and fingerprint analysis are expected to strengthen the prosecution's case. Coordination between Delhi and Rajasthan Police is ongoing to establish the full extent of his criminal activities. A Special Commissioner's review of the crime scene and security procedures at residential areas is anticipated, given the vulnerability exploited in this case. Further investigation remains underway as police work to compile a comprehensive case file for judicial proceedings.
