Supreme Court's Historic Directive: Declare Jharkhand's Saranda Forest a Wildlife Sanctuary

In a significant move to curb rampant exploitation of nature and protect rare biodiversity, the Supreme Court of India has issued a major directive. A bench headed by the Chief Justice of India has ordered the Jharkhand government to formally declare the Saranda forest area a wildlife sanctuary. This step aims to control illegal mining and secure the region's rich ecology.

Why is Saranda Forest So Important?

Saranda, which means 'Land of 700 Hills' in the local Ho language, is located in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. This region is one of India's densest Sal forests and is often called the 'Amazon of India'. Rivers like Koel, Sanjay, and Karam flow here, forming the backbone of its ecosystem.

Its biodiversity is unique. It is home to elephants, leopards, gaurs, and several rare bird species. It is also a crucial elephant corridor and acts as an effective carbon sink, helping mitigate climate change.

An Example of Judicial Activism

The Supreme Court's intervention is a prime example of 'Judicial Activism'. This is when the judiciary, not limited to just hearing cases, takes suo moto cognizance of issues of public interest and directs the executive to act. The court assumed this proactive role in response to the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

The Road Ahead

Declaring Saranda a wildlife sanctuary is a welcome step, but the challenges ahead are significant. These include enforcing strict mining regulations, promoting afforestation, protecting the interests of local tribal communities, and promoting sustainable development through eco-tourism.

The Supreme Court's verdict sends a clear message that short-term economic gains cannot come at the cost of nature. It is a crucial step towards preserving our natural heritage for future generations.
