KL Rahul Set to Return as India ODI Captain After Shubman Gill Suffers Serious Neck Injury – South Africa Series 2025
Digital Desk
In a major leadership twist, KL Rahul is poised to lead Team India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa starting November 30, 2025, in Ranchi. Regular ODI captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out due to a serious neck injury sustained during the Kolkata Test, marking Rahul’s return as India’s ODI captain after nearly two years.
Shubman Gill Neck Injury More Serious Than Expected
Shubman Gill suffered a whiplash injury while batting in the first Test against England in Kolkata. Initially thought to be a minor neck spasm, medical reports now suggest possible muscular or nerve-related complications. The 26-year-old is undergoing MRI scans and specialist consultation with renowned spinal expert Dr. Abhay Nene in Mumbai.
A BCCI official confirmed to PTI:
“All tests are being conducted to determine the exact nature of the injury. Gill has received injections for pain management and will need several weeks of rest followed by rehabilitation. There is a strong possibility he may miss the entire South Africa white-ball leg, including the T20I series.”
KL Rahul’s Impressive Captaincy Record in ODIs
KL Rahul last captained India in ODIs during the 2023 South Africa tour. He has led India in 12 ODI matches, winning 8 with a solid 66% win percentage, making him the most experienced and reliable choice in Gill’s absence.

In contrast, Rishabh Pant, who is currently leading India in the Guwahati Test, was considered but his limited recent ODI exposure (only 1 match in the last year post his 2022 car accident) worked against him.
