India's boxing contingent shines at Commonwealth Games 2026 as Arundhati Choudhary upsets defending champion Rosie Eccles while four other Indian boxers qualify for the finals.
India continued its impressive campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a dominant display in boxing as five Indian pugilists secured places in their respective finals, guaranteeing at least five more silver medals while keeping hopes alive for multiple golds.
Leading the charge was Arundhati Choudhary, who produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating defending Commonwealth champion Rosie Eccles of Wales in the women's 70kg semifinal. The victory highlighted India's growing strength in women's boxing and added another major milestone to the country's campaign in Glasgow.
Arundhati Stuns Defending Champion
World No. 2 Arundhati Choudhary displayed remarkable composure and tactical discipline to overcome the experienced Welsh boxer. Despite Eccles enjoying home support and starting aggressively, the Indian boxer relied on sharp counter-attacks and precise combinations to seize control of the contest.
A standing count against Eccles late in the opening round shifted momentum in Arundhati's favour. She maintained that advantage in the second round with cleaner punching and superior timing before successfully defending her lead in the final round.
The judges awarded Arundhati a 4-0 split decision victory, sending her into the gold-medal bout and ending Eccles' unbeaten run since winning the Commonwealth title in 2022.
Four More Indians Reach Gold Medal Bouts
Arundhati was not the only Indian boxer to shine on Friday.
Jaismine Lamboria, Ankush Panghal, Preeti Pawar and Jadumani Singh also won their respective semifinal contests to qualify for the finals, ensuring a strong Indian presence on the concluding day of the boxing competition.
Their consistent performances underline India's growing depth in amateur boxing, with both men's and women's categories contributing significantly to the country's medal tally.
India's Medal Count Continues to Rise
With boxing adding another successful day, India's overall medal tally at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued to grow.
The country has so far won 17 medals, including three gold, nine silver and five bronze medals.
India's gold medals have come through:
-
Mirabai Chanu – Women's 48kg Weightlifting
-
Sharmila Dhankar – Women's Shot Put F57
-
Dilip Gavit – Men's 100m T47
Several athletes have also contributed silver and bronze medals across athletics, weightlifting and para events, reflecting India's all-round performance at the Games.
Gold Medal Opportunities Ahead
With five boxers entering the finals, India now has an opportunity to significantly improve its gold medal tally over the coming days.
Arundhati Choudhary's victory over an established Commonwealth champion has particularly raised expectations, while the remaining finalists will also aim to convert their assured medals into gold.
Indian boxing has traditionally been among the country's strongest disciplines at multi-sport events, and the performances in Glasgow suggest another successful chapter could be added to that legacy.
As the Commonwealth Games approach their final stages, boxing is expected to remain one of India's biggest medal hopes.
