India’s emphatic five-wicket win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final has been overshadowed by unprecedented controversy. The Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, citing national security concerns.
After the victory, Indian players protested on stage, declining to collect the Asia Cup trophy and medals. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained the decision, stating, “India cannot take the trophy from a person who is waging a war against our country.” Saikia further condemned Naqvi’s act of leaving with the trophy and medals, calling it “childish and unexpected.” He confirmed that BCCI will lodge a strong protest with the ICC at its upcoming meeting in Dubai this November.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, one of India’s standout performers, delivered a heartfelt message. He said his “real trophies” are his teammates and support staff who fought together to lift the Asia Cup. SKY went further by pledging his entire Asia Cup match fee of Rs.28 lakh to support India’s Armed Forces and the families of victims affected by the Pahalgam terror attack. “You always remain in my thoughts. Jai Hind,” he posted on X.
The bizarre turn of events has sparked heated discussions across cricketing circles. Fans and experts alike expressed shock at a champion team being denied its trophy. Yet, India’s players emphasized that their hard-fought triumph and unity matter more than the silverware.
With the controversy escalating, the upcoming ICC meeting will be crucial in deciding the future of trophy presentations under political strain. For now, India celebrates its Asia Cup 2025 win, with the spirit of sportsmanship and solidarity shining brighter than the missing trophy.
