Chelsea 6-3 Leeds: Palmer Sparks Carabao Cup Comeback

Chelsea came from 2-0 down to beat Leeds 6-3 in the Carabao Cup as Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto inspired a stunning comeback.

Chelsea produced a remarkable second-half turnaround at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, recovering from 2-0 down to beat Leeds United 6-3 in the Carabao Cup third round.

Xabi Alonso’s heavily rotated side struggled badly in the opening half, but the Chelsea manager’s decision to introduce Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and Reece James at half-time transformed the contest.

Palmer scored twice within two minutes, while Neto, Danny Welbeck and Valentin Barco also found the net as Chelsea turned a difficult night into a convincing victory. Welbeck added his second in stoppage time to complete the nine-goal thriller.

However, the reshuffled team struggled to establish any rhythm. Leeds were more cohesive and created the clearer chances before Tarik Muharemovic headed them in front in the 23rd minute.

The situation became even more difficult shortly after half-time when Brenden Aaronson doubled Leeds' advantage in the 48th minute.

Alonso responded immediately, bringing on four established players. Reece James, Palmer, Rogers and Neto replaced Reggie Watson, Malo Gusto, Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian.

After the match, Alonso accepted responsibility for the problems caused by his initial selection, saying he needed to help his players better and take his share of the blame.

Palmer changes the game

The introduction of Palmer proved decisive.

Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute and Palmer converted to reduce the deficit. Only two minutes later, the England international struck again to make it 2-2.

The equaliser completely changed the atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge and shifted the momentum towards the hosts.

Rogers was particularly influential after coming off the bench, repeatedly finding space and creating opportunities for Chelsea's attack. His involvement was central to several of Chelsea's goals.

Four goals in 12 minutes

Chelsea completed their extraordinary turnaround in a matter of minutes.

Neto put the Blues ahead in the 60th minute before Welbeck added another five minutes later.

That meant Chelsea had scored four goals in just 12 second-half minutes, turning a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 advantage.

Leeds refused to surrender. Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back in the 75th minute to make it 4-3 and briefly gave the visitors hope of another comeback.

But Barco restored Chelsea's two-goal advantage in the 80th minute, with Rogers again involved in the move.

Welbeck then completed the scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Chelsea's squad depth comes into focus

The victory highlighted both the strength and weakness of Alonso's squad.

Chelsea have a large group of players competing for places, and the Carabao Cup provides an important opportunity to keep fringe players involved during the season.

Yet Wednesday's first half also showed the difference between Chelsea's established players and some of the less experienced members of the squad.

Sixteen-year-old Reggie Watson made his Chelsea debut but was substituted at half-time after being booked. Estevao and Gittens were also withdrawn as Alonso sought to restore control.

The manager later indicated that the younger players should not simply be blamed for the poor performance, suggesting that his own decisions also played a role.

Palmer and Rogers provide timely reminder

For Chelsea, the biggest positive was the impact of their senior attacking players.

Palmer immediately showed why his presence can change the dynamic of the team, while Rogers provided creativity and helped unlock a Leeds defence that had looked comfortable for much of the first half.

Neto also made a decisive contribution after coming off the bench, scoring during Chelsea's rapid four-goal burst.

The comeback therefore offered Alonso two contrasting lessons: Chelsea possess enough attacking quality to overturn difficult situations, but excessive rotation can disrupt the team's rhythm.

Chelsea move into the Carabao Cup fourth round

The 6-3 victory sends Chelsea into the Carabao Cup fourth round and keeps another route to silverware open.

With Chelsea not involved in European competition this season, domestic cup fixtures also provide valuable competitive minutes for a squad containing established internationals, younger players and several fringe options.

For Alonso, however, the night was less about the final scoreline than the warning contained in the opening 45 minutes.

Chelsea eventually found their attacking spark, but it took four major half-time changes to unlock it.
