Chelsea Sign Emiliano Martinez From Aston Villa On Three-Year Deal

Chelsea sign Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year deal worth a reported £7.5 million.

Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper joins Chelsea for a reported £7.5 million, with the experienced shot-stopper expected to challenge Robert Sanchez for the No. 1 position.

Chelsea have completed the signing of Emiliano “Dibu” Martinez from Aston Villa on a three-year contract, strengthening their goalkeeping department ahead of the new Premier League season. The 33-year-old Argentina international joins for a reported £7.5 million ($10.15 million), although neither club officially disclosed the transfer fee.

Martinez arrives at Stamford Bridge after six successful years at Aston Villa, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers. His move reunites him with a major English club after beginning his professional career at Arsenal.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is hoping the experienced goalkeeper can provide greater stability in a position that has come under scrutiny.

Chelsea Complete Martinez Move

Chelsea officially announced Martinez’s arrival on Sunday, bringing an end to his six-year spell at Villa Park.

The Argentine joined Villa from Arsenal in 2020 and made 256 appearances for the club. He became an important figure during Villa’s rise under Unai Emery and played a key role in their successful 2025-26 campaign, which included Champions League qualification and a Europa League triumph.

Martinez said he wants to bring his winning mentality to Chelsea.

“I want to be successful here,” he said, adding that he wants to help a club with a history of winning major titles.

Three-Year Stamford Bridge Deal

The 33-year-old goalkeeper has signed a contract running for three years.

British media reports put the transfer value at approximately £7.5 million, making the deal a relatively modest investment for a goalkeeper with Martinez’s international and European experience.

The transfer was completed quickly after Chelsea identified goalkeeper as an area requiring reinforcement.

Martinez had reportedly been looking for a new challenge, while Villa’s decision to sign Japan international Zion Suzuki from Parma reduced his prospects of remaining the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Robert Sanchez Faces Challenge

Martinez’s arrival puts immediate pressure on Robert Sanchez, who has been Chelsea’s preferred goalkeeper since joining from Brighton in 2023.

Sanchez’s position had already come under scrutiny after errors during Chelsea’s opening Premier League match against Fulham, despite the Blues winning 3-2.

Martinez brings considerable experience and a proven record at the highest level. His arrival gives Alonso an established alternative and could create a direct competition for the starting position.

The Argentine is expected to push strongly for the No. 1 role.

Martinez’s Villa Legacy

Martinez leaves Aston Villa after one of the most successful periods of his club career.

After arriving from Arsenal in 2020, he quickly became a key part of Villa’s defensive structure. His performances helped the club return to the Champions League and later win the Europa League under Emery.

Villa described Martinez as a commanding presence and credited him with playing a major role in the club’s recent success.

His departure follows a busy transfer window at Villa Park, with several important players also leaving the club.

Argentina World Cup Hero

Martinez’s reputation extends far beyond the Premier League.

He played a crucial role in Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, producing decisive saves during the tournament, including in the final against France.

He also helped Argentina win the Copa America in 2021 and 2024. The goalkeeper was part of Argentina’s squad that reached the 2026 World Cup final, where they finished runners-up to Spain.

Martinez has also won the Yashin Trophy twice, recognising him as the world’s leading goalkeeper in 2023 and 2024.

Villa Turn To Zion Suzuki

Martinez’s departure became possible after Villa signed Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma earlier in the transfer window.

Suzuki is now expected to take over as Villa’s first-choice goalkeeper as Emery rebuilds his squad for the new campaign.

The transfer represents a significant change between the posts for Villa after Martinez had been a central figure for six seasons.

For Chelsea, meanwhile, his arrival provides immediate experience at a position that has been under scrutiny.

Chelsea Strengthen Goalkeeping

Martinez is the latest significant addition to an increasingly ambitious Chelsea squad under Alonso.

His experience in Premier League football, European competition and international tournaments gives Chelsea an established goalkeeper capable of handling pressure at the highest level.

The move also reflects Chelsea’s desire to compete for major honours after recent inconsistency.

With Martinez now competing with Sanchez, Alonso has greater depth and a potentially decisive selection battle ahead of the season.

What Martinez Brings

Chelsea are not simply acquiring another goalkeeper. They are adding a player with a strong personality, considerable experience and a proven record of performing in high-pressure matches.

Martinez’s competitive character has been one of his defining qualities throughout his career.

His challenge now is to translate that success into another chapter at Stamford Bridge and establish himself as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper.

For Villa, the focus shifts towards building around Suzuki and replacing the influence of a goalkeeper who played a major role in their transformation.

For Chelsea, the £7.5 million deal could prove significant if Martinez can solve their long-running uncertainty between the posts.
