England capped off a dominant T20I series with a comprehensive 56-run victory over India in the fifth and final match at Southampton's Rose Bowl, completing a 4-0 series win after the opening game was washed out. The result also ended India's 1,601-day stay at the top of the ICC Men's T20I rankings, with England reclaiming the No.1 spot.
The hosts produced one of their finest batting performances in T20 internationals after captain Jos Buttler smashed a breathtaking 131 off 64 deliveries, while Harry Brook remained unbeaten on 95 from just 45 balls. Their 233-run partnership powered England to a record 257/3, the highest T20I total ever scored against India. The stand also entered the record books as one of the biggest partnerships in international T20 cricket.
India, already trailing 3-0 in the series, responded with intent but never seriously threatened the target. Ishan Kishan led the chase with 56, while Tilak Varma struck a quick-fire 53. However, regular wickets prevented the visitors from building sustained momentum as they finished on 201/8.
Sam Curran starred with the ball for England, claiming three wickets, while Adil Rashid added two crucial breakthroughs during the middle overs to ensure the required run rate remained out of India's reach.
The fifth T20I was briefly delayed before the toss after India's team bus was caught in heavy traffic on its way to the stadium. Despite the disruption, England maintained complete control once play began, with Buttler and Brook taking charge after an early wicket.
Buttler's innings marked his first T20I century in several years and was his highest score in the format. Brook once again demonstrated why he has become one of England's most reliable white-ball batters, narrowly missing out on a century while maintaining an aggressive scoring rate throughout the innings.
The series proved disappointing for the reigning T20 world champions. India failed to register a single victory across five matches, with one contest abandoned because of rain and England winning the remaining four. The defeat also marked India's second consecutive unsuccessful bilateral T20I series after recent setbacks, raising questions ahead of the upcoming ODI leg of the tour.
England, meanwhile, emerged with several positives beyond the series scoreline. Their batting unit consistently dominated India's bowling attack, while the pace combination of Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue and Sam Curran provided crucial breakthroughs throughout the series. Harry Brook's leadership also drew praise after guiding the side to another commanding home performance.
For India, there were individual positives despite the overall result. Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma showed encouraging form in the final match, but the team struggled to deliver complete performances with both bat and ball. Fielding lapses and an inability to contain England's aggressive middle-order batting remained recurring concerns during the series.
Attention will now shift to the three-match ODI series between the two sides, where India are expected to welcome back several senior players. England, buoyed by their emphatic T20 triumph and return to the top of the ICC rankings, will look to carry the same momentum into the 50-over format.
