FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings following the on-field confrontation that broke out after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 to lift the title at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The incident occurred moments after the final whistle during Spain's celebrations, when several players and team officials from both sides became involved in a heated altercation. FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has reportedly appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine the incident and determine whether any provisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Code were violated.

What Triggered the Altercation?

According to reports, tensions escalated as Spain celebrated its World Cup victory.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes allegedly grabbed Spain defender Eric García by the neck during the confrontation. Argentina full-back Nahuel Molina is also reported to have attempted to strike Spain midfielder Rodri.

A verbal exchange reportedly followed between Argentina captain Nicolás Otamendi and Rodri, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also involved in a dispute with Spain forward Dani Olmo.

Although emotions ran high after the dramatic final, Lionel Messi was not reported to have participated in the confrontation.

Players Could Face Three-Match Suspension

Under Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, players found guilty of violent conduct may receive a minimum suspension of three official matches, with the possibility of additional sanctions depending on the severity of the offence.

FIFA's investigation will assess video footage, referee reports, and other available evidence before reaching a final decision.

Apart from player suspensions, financial penalties and disciplinary action against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) could also be considered if the governing body is found responsible for misconduct involving its players or officials.

The latest disciplinary case comes as Argentina is already facing another FIFA investigation over the display of a political banner following its World Cup semifinal victory over England.

The banner, carrying the message "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Malvinas/Falkland Islands are Argentine"), is being reviewed by FIFA to determine whether it breached tournament regulations concerning political messaging.

The post-final confrontation has added to the challenges facing the Argentine delegation, with FIFA now examining two separate disciplinary matters involving the team.
