Harbhajan Singh nominated by Punjab Cricket Association for BCCI President Election

Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has emerged as a strong contender for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president position, with the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) reportedly nominating the cricket legend for the upcoming elections.

PCA Backs Harbhajan for Top BCCI Role

The 45-year-old former off-spinner, who played 367 international matches and claimed over 700 wickets across formats, has been chosen by the PCA as their representative for the BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for September 28. Unlike Sachin Tendulkar, who officially denied interest in the BCCI presidency through his management company, Harbhajan has maintained silence about the speculation.

Election Timeline and Process

According to BCCI electoral officer AK Joti, the nomination window opens on September 20-21, with scrutiny on September 22. Candidates can withdraw nominations by September 23, followed by elections on September 28. Only candidates backed by state cricket associations are eligible to contest for the top position.

Strong Administrative Background

Harbhajan brings significant credentials beyond cricket, serving as a Rajya Sabha member from the Aam Aadmi Party since 2022 and previously working as an advisor to the Punjab Cricket Association. The BCCI has historically favored former cricketers for leadership roles, with Sourav Ganguly (2019-22) and Roger Binny (2022-25) previously holding the presidency.

Competition for Top Post

While Harbhajan's nomination generates excitement, former India wicketkeeper Kiran More has emerged as the frontrunner, with sources indicating unanimous support from state associations. The elections will also fill positions for vice-president, secretary, joint secretary, and treasurer, though incumbents are expected to continue in most roles.

The BCCI presidency became vacant after Roger Binny stepped down upon turning 70 in July, with current vice-president Rajeev Shukla serving as interim president.
