ICC reprimanded Pant: He lashed out at the umpire at Headingley for not changing the ball, Was handed one demerit point for breaching the code of conduct.

Team India’s vice-captain Rishabh Pant has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and handed one demerit point. The Indian team is currently on a tour of England, and during the third day of the Headingley Test, Pant got into an argument with the on-field umpire over not changing the ball.

According to the council, Pant breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, for which he received one demerit point. No financial penalty was imposed as part of the punishment. This was Pant’s first offense in a 24-month period.

As per ICC rules, accumulating four demerit points within 24 months results in a one-match suspension.

Pant admitted his mistake and accepted the sanction imposed by ICC Elite Panel match referee Richie Richardson.

Incident occurred on Day 3 of the match
On the third day of the match, during the 61st over of England’s innings, Mohammed Siraj came on to bowl. After the third delivery, Jasprit Bumrah raised concerns about the ball and asked the umpire to check it using the ball gauge. However, the ball passed the test.

Then, on the fifth ball of the over, Harry Brook stepped out and hit a boundary. After this, Rishabh Pant also complained about the ball to the other umpire. Once again, the ball passed the gauge test, but Pant appeared visibly upset and, in frustration, threw the ball away. (The gauge test is used to measure the size of the ball.)

What does the Code of Conduct say?
According to the ICC Code of Conduct:

  • Level 1 and Level 2 violations can result in 1 to 2 demerit points along with a fine of 0 to 50% of the match fee.

  • Level 3 violations can lead to a suspension of 6 Test matches or 12 ODIs.

Pant has been penalized with 1 demerit point under a Level 1 offense.

If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months, these convert into suspension points, resulting in a ban of:

  • 1 Test match, or

  • 2 ODIs, or

  • 2 T20Is.
