Dhruv Jurel’s unbeaten 115 powered India to 503/9 declared before Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar struck twice as Sri Lanka ended Day 2 at 8/2 in Colombo.
Jurel Leads India Charge
Dhruv Jurel produced a superb unbeaten 115 to put India firmly in command of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Monday.
India declared their first innings at 503/9 on a rain-affected Day 2, leaving Sri Lanka with a huge deficit. The hosts finished the day at 8/2, trailing India by 495 runs with eight first-innings wickets remaining.
India Build Huge Total
India resumed Day 2 at 300/5 after Devdutt Padikkal's century had provided the foundation on the opening day.
Jurel continued confidently alongside Rishabh Pant, who returned to the crease after retiring hurt on Sunday. The pair added 112 runs for the seventh wicket, taking India's total beyond 400 before Pant was dismissed for a fluent 63.
Jurel Completes Second Ton
Jurel remained composed as wickets fell around him and reached his second Test century in impressive fashion.
He eventually finished unbeaten on 115 off 177 balls, hitting nine fours and two sixes. His innings provided the stability India needed to push towards a total above 500 before declaring.
The century also underlined Jurel's growing value to India's Test middle and lower order.
Padikkal Sets Foundation
India's massive total was built on contributions from several batters.
Devdutt Padikkal scored 117 on the opening day, while captain Shubman Gill and Pant made important half-centuries. Jurel then took charge of the lower order and ensured India finished with a commanding first-innings score.
Sri Lankan seamer Asitha Fernando was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 4/106, but India's batting depth prevented the hosts from making significant inroads.
India Strike Before Stumps
India had only three overs to bowl before bad light and rain disrupted play, but the bowlers made them count.
Prasidh Krishna dismissed Lahiru Udara for 1, with Yashasvi Jaiswal completing an excellent catch at third slip. Manav Suthar then trapped nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya for 2 with the final ball of the day.
Sri Lanka were left at 8/2, with debutant Kamil Mishara unbeaten on five.
Sri Lanka Face Huge Deficit
The hosts now face a daunting task to stay in the match. Sri Lanka trail by 495 runs and have already lost two wickets despite batting for only three overs.
India's strong position has been strengthened further by the early breakthroughs, although rain and interruptions remain a major factor at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground.
The first Test in Galle was also won by India, by 165 runs, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
India Eye Series Sweep
With India already leading the series, the visitors will look to press home their advantage when play resumes on Day 3.
Jurel's century, backed by Padikkal's earlier hundred and India's early strikes, has given the visitors complete control. Sri Lanka will need a major batting recovery to prevent India from pushing for another victory and a 2-0 series sweep.
