India Squad Update: Pant Out, Jurel steps in as selectors finalise West Indies Test Team
Digital Desk
he Indian cricket selectors led by Ajit Agarkar are set to announce the 15-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against the West Indies, with star wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant officially ruled out due to his ongoing recovery from a foot fracture.
Pant's Injury Continues to Sideline Star Keeper
Rishabh Pant, who suffered a fractured left foot during the fourth Test against England at Manchester in July, will miss the home series as he continues his rehabilitation at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The 27-year-old was injured while attempting a reverse sweep against Chris Woakes and has been undergoing intensive treatment since returning from England.
Dhruv Jurel Emerges as First-Choice Wicketkeeper
In Pant's absence, Dhruv Jurel is set to take charge of the wicketkeeping duties for the West Indies series. The 24-year-old has already proven his worth, maintaining an unbeaten record in Test cricket with five wins from his first five matches. Jurel stepped in admirably during the England series, keeping wickets in the final three Tests and earning praise for his sharp glovework.
Middle-Order Batting Concerns Emerge
The selectors face a crucial decision regarding the middle-order composition, particularly with Karun Nair's disappointing performance in England casting doubt over his position. Despite his strong domestic form with 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy, Nair managed only 205 runs across four Tests in England at an average of just 25.62, with his sole half-century coming at The Oval.
Devdutt Padikkal has emerged as a strong contender after his impressive 150 against Australia A in the recent India A fixtures. The Karnataka left-hander's composed century, his seventh in first-class cricket, has strengthened his case for inclusion in the Test squad. Padikkal's timing couldn't be better, as he seeks to capitalize on limited opportunities following brief appearances during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
Nitish Kumar Reddy's Recovery Uncertain
All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy remains doubtful for selection as he continues his rehabilitation from a Grade I left knee injury sustained during the England tour. The 22-year-old has been recovering at the BCCI Centre of Excellence and initially targeted the Asia Cup for his return. Reports suggest his recovery is progressing well, but his fitness for the West Indies series remains questionable.
Series Details and Team Dynamics
The two-match Test series will commence on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by the second Test in New Delhi from October 10-14. This series marks captain Shubman Gill's first home Test series as leader and forms part of the 2025-27 ICC World Test Championship cycle.
The West Indies squad, led by Roston Chase, features experienced players like Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Alick Athanaze, with spinner Khary Pierre receiving his first call-up. Currently ranked eighth in Test cricket, the Caribbean side faces a challenging task against the fourth-ranked Indian team.
The selection meeting, conducted virtually due to chief selector Ajit Agarkar's presence in the UAE for the Asia Cup, is expected to be held on September 24. With India needing strong performances to maintain their World Test Championship standing, the squad composition will be crucial for the upcoming home season.
