India unveils Test Squad for West Indies Series: Jadeja appointed Vice-Captain, Nair Omitted

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named a 15-man squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies, kicking off at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 2. Shubman Gill will lead India, while all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja steps in as vice-captain, replacing injured wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who has been rested to recover from a toe fracture.

Squad Highlights and Changes
The biggest talking point is the surprising omission of Karun Nair. After returning to Test cricket earlier this year, Nair managed only 205 runs in eight innings and has been left out to make way for promising opener Devdutt Padikkal, who earns a recall following his inclusion in India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad. “We expected more from Karun Nair; Padikkal offers greater consistency,” explained chief selector Ajit Agarkar at the press conference.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah reclaims his spot alongside Mohammed Siraj, forming India’s new-ball attack. The spin department features Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel, ensuring a versatile bowling lineup in subcontinental conditions.

Series Context and Preparation
This two-Test series is part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27, with India currently sitting third on the WTC points table. The West Indies will acclimatize with a six-day training camp at the Narendra Modi Stadium. India’s squad is slated to begin practice on September 29—immediately after the Asia Cup final—allowing for seamless transition for players doubling up in both tournaments.
