India will take on Bangladesh in the first semi-final of the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, with Harmanpreet Kaur’s side looking to maintain its unbeaten run and secure a place in the final.
India have been one of the strongest teams in the tournament so far, winning all three of their Group A matches against Thailand, Hong Kong and Pakistan. Bangladesh, meanwhile, finished second in Group B after two wins and a defeat.
The match is scheduled to begin at 8 pm IST.
India Have Dominated Recent Meetings
India enter the knockout clash with a significant advantage in recent head-to-head results. The Indian team has won the last eight completed T20I meetings against Bangladesh, while Bangladesh’s most recent victory over India came in July 2023.
Overall, India have won 21 of their 24 meetings with Bangladesh in the format, according to current tournament previews.
However, India will not want to take the result for granted. Bangladesh famously defeated India in the 2018 Women’s Asia Cup final to win their only continental title. That historic upset remains a reminder of what can happen in a knockout match.
Smriti Mandhana the Biggest Batting Threat
Much of the attention will be on Smriti Mandhana, who has been in outstanding form during the tournament.
Mandhana has scored 152 runs in three matches, including a spectacular 124 against Hong Kong. That innings also took her past Mithali Raj to become the leading run-scorer in women’s international cricket. She also moved ahead of Meg Lanning and Laura Wolvaardt to become the leading century-maker in women’s international cricket.
Her opening partnership with Shafali Verma has provided India with a powerful start throughout the competition. Shafali has contributed 104 runs in three matches, making the opening pair one of Bangladesh’s biggest challenges.
Deepti Sharma Leads India's Spin Attack
India’s bowling strength has been equally important.
Deepti Sharma has taken eight wickets in three matches, while Sree Charani has seven. Their performances have helped India control the middle overs and put pressure on opposition batters.
Dubai conditions have also brought spin into the contest, making India’s all-round bowling options particularly important in the semi-final.
Bangladesh Will Rely on Marufa and Sobhana
Bangladesh reached the semi-finals after defeating the UAE by 34 runs in their final Group B match. They defended a total of just 103/7, restricting the UAE to 69/9. Rabeya Khan starred with 3/14, while Marufa Akter and Nahida Akter also contributed with the ball.
With the bat, Sobhana Mostary is Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer in the tournament, with 77 runs from three matches. Marufa Akter has also been among the team's leading wicket-takers, giving Bangladesh an important bowling option against India's aggressive top order.
India’s Middle Order Faces a Test
While India’s opening pair has been highly productive, the middle order could face a tougher examination in the semi-final.
A tournament preview noted that Mandhana and Shafali have accounted for a large share of India's runs in the competition, while players in the middle order have had fewer opportunities to make substantial contributions.
That could become significant if Bangladesh manages to take early wickets. India will therefore want Harmanpreet Kaur, Pratika Rawal, Bharti Fulmali, Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma to provide stability if the top order is tested.
Semi-Final Could Produce a High-Pressure Contest
India's perfect group-stage record makes them the clear favourites, but Bangladesh arrive with the confidence of having reached the last four and will have little pressure compared with their opponents.
The second semi-final will feature Sri Lanka against Pakistan on September 11, with the final scheduled for September 13 in Dubai.
For India, the immediate objective is straightforward: continue their recent dominance over Bangladesh, neutralise the opposition's bowling threat and book a place in another Asia Cup final.
