Irfan Pathan Urges Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to Continue Playing, Advises Shubman Gill on Handling Pressure

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has called on senior cricketers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to extend their playing careers for as long as possible, emphasizing the value of their experience for both international and domestic cricket. Speaking on the ‘Follow The Blues’ show ahead of India’s ODI series against New Zealand, Pathan also offered guidance to young captain Shubman Gill on managing expectations and pressures that come with leading the national team.

Pathan stresses Ro-Ko’s continued presence
Pathan highlighted the importance of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the current cricketing landscape. “You definitely want to think about the ICC 2027 ODI World Cup. It is far away, but I just want to see both Rohit and Kohli playing for the longest time, for India and when not playing international cricket, in domestic cricket. They are playing just one format and nothing else, so the more they play, the better it is,” he said.

The ex-pacer underlined that his plea is not a directive but a recognition of the strategic and motivational role the duo plays for Indian cricket. Analysts agree that the presence of seasoned players like Rohit and Kohli provides stability, mentorship, and tactical depth, especially for younger talent navigating the transition into international cricket.

Guidance for Shubman Gill amid comparisons
Pathan also reflected on the challenges facing Shubman Gill, who recently assumed the role of India’s Test captain and is expected to lead in ODIs. Recalling advice from Rahul Dravid during his own debut at 19, Pathan told Gill: “It’s good that you have reached this level, but things will only get difficult from here on. You will get used to handling it.”

He further addressed the constant comparisons between Gill and Virat Kohli, emphasizing the pressure that comes with high expectations. “Virat Kohli was constantly compared to Sachin Tendulkar and was expected to perform at that level. Now that Kohli has reached those heights, Gill is being compared to him. There are expectations that he must match those standards and score close to 25,000–30,000 runs, and he certainly has the ability to do so,” Pathan added.

Balancing experience and youth
Pathan’s comments come as India prepares for a home ODI series against New Zealand, with selectors emphasizing a mix of experienced leaders and emerging talent. His insights underscore the importance of mentorship and continuity in cricket while highlighting the resilience required for young leaders to thrive under scrutiny.
