Delhi Capitals on Tuesday named Jemimah Rodrigues as their new captain for the upcoming Women's Premier League season, ending Meg Lanning's three-year tenure at the helm.
The 25-year-old batter, a mainstay since the league's inception, takes over after the franchise released the Australian legend ahead of the mega auction. Lanning, who guided DC to finals in all three editions but no title, joined UP Warriorz for ₹1.9 crore.
Rodrigues was retained for ₹2.2 crore as part of DC's core group, alongside Shafali Verma, Marizanne Kapp, Annabel Sutherland, and Niki Prasad. Co-owner Parth Jindal had signalled a preference for an Indian leader post-auction, ruling out new signing Laura Wolvaardt despite her captaincy experience with South Africa.
The announcement came with a heartfelt presentation, including messages from Rodrigues' family and coach highlighting her journey.
Rodrigues steps up after a breakout 2025. She smashed an unbeaten 127 against Australia in the ODI World Cup semi-final, propelling India to their maiden title with a final win over South Africa.
In WPL, she has 507 runs across 27 matches at a strike rate of 139.66, often anchoring chases. Previously vice-captain, her tactical acumen and composure under pressure made her the natural successor.
DC open their campaign against defending champions Mumbai Indians on January 10 in Navi Mumbai.
The squad blends youth and experience, featuring Wolvaardt, Lizelle Lee, and Kapp overseas, with emerging talents like Sneh Rana and Shree Charani bolstering spin.
Three-time runners-up, Delhi aim to finally clinch the trophy under Rodrigues' fresh leadership. Her infectious energy and big-match temperament could prove the difference in high-stakes knockouts.
As WPL enters its fourth year, the shift to homegrown captaincy signals a broader trend toward empowering Indian players in franchise cricket.
